Hart County is a rural county in northeast Georgia.  Hart County has a population of 23,000 and a land area of 257 square miles.

The county has eight fire stations that are staffed entirely with volunteer firefighters.  Each station covers a 5 road mile area from it’s station.  The station is managed by officers elected within the station to include: a Station Commander, two Lieutenants, two Squad Leaders, and a Training Officer.  The Station Commanders are responsible for the proper readiness of their station’s equipment and personnel.

Each station is provided with an E-One Top Side Control Pumper on an International Chassis, a Tanker, a Fire Knocker Unit, and one or more four wheel drive brush trucks.  Two stations have a mobile air truck/unit and there are 6 front-mount pumper trucks still in operation as reserve pumpers.

The department is listed as a combination department due to having a full-time chief and two firefighters whom work Monday thru Friday from 8 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.   These firefighters assist volunteers by performing hydrant test and maintenance, pumper tests, record retention, station readiness and equipment checks.

We do wish to congratulate Chief Jerry Byrum on his recent appointment as Chief by the County Commissioner’s.  We wish him well as he stands to lead this department in the ever changing status within the fire service.
